National connectivity: a win (social)-win (business) proposal

 

To relieve Port Louis congestion and provide better connectivity to new commercial centers, a specific bus loop route should be implemented along the M1 corridor in conjunction with the Metro Express network. Over the past ten years, large retail and entertainment complexes such as Bagatelle Mall, Tribeca Mall, and La City Trianon have emerged as key social and economic hubs. Nevertheless, connectivity is suboptimal for most Mauritians who do not own cars, and existing bus routes do not provide sufficient connectivity to these points. The metro system can only reach its full potential with the help of a feeder loop network that interconnects these points directly.

The new M1 Experience Loop route will run from Coromandel to Montebello via the SAJ (A1-M1) Bridge, then on to Bagatelle, Tribeca, Emerald Park, and La City Trianon, with a connector route through St Jean before resuming the circuit. It will be designed as a high-frequency route running every 10-15 minutes during peak periods and using the Metro Express card system for a flat fare. 

The cost will be jointly borne by transport authorities, the Metro Express system, and the mall operators, who will benefit from increased foot traffic, alleviated parking congestion, and enhanced social accessibility. By linking residential areas, workplaces, and leisure destinations, the loop would reduce short car trips, promote transit-oriented growth, and make commerce and entertainment more accessible. Rather than functioning as a conventional bus route, the M1 Experience Loop would serve as a cohesive mobility spine for central Mauritius.To help decongest Port Louis and improve access to emerging commercial hubs, a dedicated bus loop should be introduced along the M1 corridor in coordination with the Metro Express system. Over the past decade, major retail and entertainment centers such as Bagatelle Mall, Tribeca Mall, and La City Trianon have developed into important social and economic nodes. However, access remains inefficient for many Mauritians who lack private vehicles, and current bus routes do not adequately connect these destinations. The metro can only reach its full potential if supported by a structured feeder loop linking these nodes directly.

The proposed M1 Experience Loop would operate from Coromandel to Montebello via the SAJ (A1–M1) Bridge, then continue to Bagatelle, Tribeca, Emerald Park, and La City Trianon, with a connector through St Jean before restarting the loop. Designed as a high-frequency service, it would run every 10–15 minutes during peak hours and integrate ticketing with the Metro Express card system under a simple flat fare.
